Moving with Your Kids - Settling In - Part 1

Your move is almost completed. You have successfully arrived at your new home and the only thing left is to settle in. For you, it must be an exciting moment. However, for your children it might be either a hard experience or a simple one. As a parent you will have to be extremely attentive to their feelings.

"Soft Landing"

Learn how you can help your children adjust to their new home.Make sure you are absolutely ready to settle in. Keep in mind that you will have to think about your children's settling-in in order to be ready to deal with problems they might have as you finally get to your destination.

Try to make your kids feel at home from the moment you enter your new residence. It will be easier for your children to feel at home if they have their favorite item(s) with them as they enter their new home.

Before you move, pack and take with you (do not ship with your moving company) a "must" box for each kid. Items to pack in the "must" box include anything that might cause crying if it is missing for long time. For example: pack a few of your kids' favorite toys, books, clothes, DVD's, etc.

Your first days in your new residence are expected to be much more pleasant and relaxed if these items are present. These familiar will also help keeping your kids busy and comfortable as you settle in yourself.

The New Room

More often than not, children need time to get used to their new room as the new room is unfamiliar to them and can become a symbol of any anxieties they feel about the move. This can lead to some sleepless nights.

You can make this experience easier for your children by taking the time to show them how the new room is similar to the old room. Use the personal items you packed in the "must" box and place them in the new room to encourage a sense of familiarity.
