Unpacking Your Home After the Move

You and your belongings have arrived. The next task on your checklist is to unpack and settle in.

This might be a new home that is completely empty, waiting for your personal touch, to bring it to life, or perhaps a second home already furnished and arranged. Before you can begin the unpacking process, you should check that all your items have in fact arrived. If you hired a moving company, check against their inventory to confirm you have each box and piece of furniture. Use your own inventory, if you created one.

Once you are ready to unpack, being organized is always a sure way to help have a smooth experience and get things done efficiently. And remember, not everything has to get unpacked immediately. Enjoy at your own pace, finding each object, or piece of furniture a new home. In the meantime however, set up some basics.

Unpack Essentials

If this is your first day at the home, and you packed a First Day Essentials box, open this one first. Depending on the scale of your move, you should have everything you need in this box to cover basic needs for a few days.

Unpack The Kitchen

Unpacking some basic kitchen items is advisable. The kitchen is often the main hub of a home, where everyone can come together and have a break and refuel. Items that are not needed immediately leave in the boxes. You can organize the rest of the kitchen at a later time.

Assemble The Beds

Preparing a place for everyone to sleep is essential. If time allows, and you moved your beds with you, set these up along with the linens and place in the corresponding bedrooms. Each person can then unpack and arrange their room when ready. If you will be “camping” for the first night, set up your sleeping arrangement, so that once everyone is ready to rest, it’s a smooth and fun experience.

Bathroom Essentials

Unpack bathroom essentials that are used daily by each member of the house, including towels, and a shower curtain if needed.

Assembling Furniture

Once the basic necessities are in place, and everyone’s needs and daily routines can be met, for example, eating, sleeping, preparing and going to work or school, then, you can focus on the bigger picture and start reassembling those larger items that tend to not get moved very often.

Before assembling any furniture, think about preparing a floor plan, or a simple sketch of each room with a layout of where the larger pieces of furniture might fit. You can also get a feel for the design aesthetics. This will save time, space and energy, making the process easier.

Finishing Touches

Once the bulk of the unpacking has been completed, you can get to the last bits, such as books on shelves, placing ornaments and personal belonging, such as photos. Adding the final touches to your new home.

Storage Spaces

Storage spaces can be the last to be unpacked. At the same time though, these storage spaces may be where you are storing your boxes and certain items while unpacking, so you will want this space to be organized throughout the unpacking process. Once everything is in place and your feeling more like its your home, you can turn your attention to the storage room, often a garage, and create a functional space, or simply use it for its intended purpose, to house a car.

Now that your home is unpacked and everything has a place, you can relax! your move is completed.
