Getting Organized

"Managing a move can be a big project, but with an organized plan and a trusted team, it can be mastered and executed like a pro!".

When contemplating and preparing for a move, whether it’s local or long distance, having structure and an organized plan in place is key to an improved moving experience.

Have A Moving Binder

One of the best solutions to staying organized is to have a moving binder. There can be one to house any loose paperwork, and one on your computer where anything connected to the move can easily be accessed. This way you can keep track of correspondence, estimates, contracts etc.

Plan A To-Do List

Even if things change along the way, creating an initial road map provides guidance for the upcoming tasks to be completed. With your detailed to-do list, you can set practical goals and time frames. Include on the list everything that needs to be accomplished. As it may not be possible to determine everything that needs to get done, and the time it takes to complete, your to-do-list can easily be updated.

Moving Budget

Creating a moving budget allows to you see all costs that are associated with the move and make any decisions based on the cost. Like the to-do-list, your moving budget may change throughout the duration of the move.

De-clutter

Before you begin packing, go through all your belongings and see how you can minimize your items. There is no point in packing and moving things that you no longer use, or need. Decide what will be donated and what will be given to friends and family, or thrown away. You can view a list of organizations of Where to Donate Items Before Moving. If you have items to sell, you can organize a garage sale, or sell online.

Have A Game Plan For Packing

Knowing ahead of time what your strategy for packing will be, can save you a lot of time and keep things organized. Decide if you will go room by room, or use a different method. Starting with rooms that are not used regularly, such as guest rooms, storage, basements etc. is advised. Any non-essential items can also be packed up first.

Create Inventory

Preparing your own detailed inventory list is a good idea and can help you stay organized. It allows you to compare with the inventory list your moving company will provide you. All these tasks can be included on your to-do-list.

Labeling Your Moving Boxes

Having a labeling system in place can help you easily identify your boxes. You can even color code boxes for corresponding rooms. Color-coded labels can be purchased in office supply stores, or online. Different colored tape can also be used if you decide to use a color-coded labeling system.

There are many components involved in moving. When possible, delegate responsibilities. Coordinating and prioritizing your tasks will help you and others accomplish them more efficiently and successfully. Now that you have your move organized, its time to recruit your team!
