San Francisco Bulky Item Pickup: Recology Collection Before a Winter Move

San Francisco Bulky Item Pickup: Recology Collection Before a Winter Move

Arrange collection for unwanted large items before the keys and moving boxes change hands.

cross country movers

An old couch left over on move-out day can become a bigger problem than the boxes you are taking. San Francisco bulky item pickup needs a confirmed collection arrangement before you place unwanted furniture at the curb. Start while you still have access to the property and room to separate what is staying from what is leaving.

This checklist covers the local collection step. If furniture is still useful, our guide to donating before a move can help you decide whether donation is a better route.

Check your Recology bulky item pickup eligibility

Recology’s San Francisco program gives residential customers in buildings of five units or fewer two curbside collections per year at no additional charge. Each unit in a building with six or more units is eligible for one no-charge collection. The published limit is up to 10 items per appointment. Check the current Recology bulky items page before booking.

Ask your property manager who should make the request and whether the unit has already used its allowance. Do not assume “free bulky item pickup” means unlimited free junk removal, or that a new tenant automatically resets the number of collections.

This is the City and County of San Francisco service area. South San Francisco and other Bay Area cities have different collection arrangements. Confirm the actual provider for your address.

Separate accepted large items from hazardous waste

Make a written list before you schedule a pickup: for example, one mattress, a damaged chair and a small table. Photograph the items and record anything unusual, such as an appliance with a refrigerant or a piece that is too heavy for you to move safely.

Recology excludes hazardous waste, construction and demolition debris, auto parts and tires from this curbside program. Check its accepted-items list for each uncertain object. A refrigerator, electronic item or oversize piece may need specific instructions rather than the same handling as an ordinary chair.

Do not add more bulk items after booking without confirming the change. A “few extras” can exceed the appointment limit or leave something behind after you have moved out.

Schedule a bulky item collection before move-out day

Choose the collection date before your final property handover. Leave room to respond if an item is declined or the appointment changes. Winter rain and holiday demand make a same-day disposal plan especially fragile.

Use the booking link on Recology’s official page and save the confirmation. Read the instructions for placement, timing and identification. If you need to cancel, the current page requires notice by noon on the business day before the scheduled collection; an online confirmation may also provide a cancellation link.

Keep this appointment separate from your household shipment. California New York Express Movers arranges the move and confirms its service details with you. A municipal or waste-provider collection does not become part of that booking because both happen near your move date.

Prepare the curbside pickup without blocking access

After the appointment is confirmed, follow the provider’s directions for putting approved items next to the curb and identifying them. Recology asks for a sign reading “RECOLOGY” and an unobstructed sidewalk. Keep entrances, driveways and pedestrian routes clear.

Agree with your building on how items will get downstairs. Collection at the curb does not mean a crew will enter your apartment to remove a sofa. If you cannot move something safely, arrange suitable help before the setout time.

Do not leave old furniture outside early with a “free” note and assume it counts as a scheduled collection. Items left without a proper arrangement can become illegal dumping rather than recycling.

Have a backup for items that remain

Review the list a few days before you leave. Confirm any donation acceptance in advance, and ask a disposal provider about its fees and item restrictions if you need an alternative. Avoid promising the next occupant that collection is certain until you have a confirmed appointment and a workable setout plan.

Keep a photo of the prepared items and your confirmation until the collection is complete. If something remains, contact the provider and property manager while you can still resolve it. For questions about what belongs in your moving shipment, contact California New York Express Movers before pickup.

I had the best experience with CA-NY Express! They came highly recommended by a friend of mine who had made the same move I recently made (SF to NY), and I was not disappointed! Read more testimonials
