Planning a Move During the Holidays: Thanksgiving Preparation

Moving during Thanksgiving can put you between homes while family visits, flights and holiday meals are already on the calendar. The practical priorities are knowing what to take with you, telling your coordinator when you will be away and getting your new home ready for delivery.

The 2026 federal holiday calendar lists Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26. If your California–New York move overlaps with that week, check holiday service availability and your building's moving rules early.

Will my belongings arrive before Thanksgiving?

A pickup before the holiday does not guarantee delivery before Thanksgiving. California New York Express Movers schedules your delivery and contacts you with the arrangements. If you need your belongings by a particular day, tell your coordinator when booking and ask which options are available.

The earliest delivery date on your paperwork records the first day you can accept your belongings. The actual appointment is arranged separately. Check any dates you are unsure about with your coordinator before making commitments that depend on the shipment arriving. If you have a gap between leaving one home and getting access to the next, ask about moving and storage options.

Holiday availability varies among moving companies. Ask California New York Express Movers about service on your proposed moving date, including any closures. For the terms that apply to your shipment, refer to California New York Express Movers' delivery policy.

Before you move during the holidays

Give the office any dates when you cannot receive delivery, along with the rules at your destination. Share these details well in advance:

  • Travel dates: when you will be away and when you will have the keys to your new home.
  • Building restrictions: hours allowed for loading and unloading, holiday closures and how much notice is needed for an elevator or loading area reservation.
  • Contact details: your new address and unit, plus a phone number where you can be reached while traveling.

For example, if you are moving to New York but spending November 25–28 with family outside the city, tell your coordinator before pickup. The team needs to know that you will be unavailable during those dates when arranging delivery.

If you live in an apartment, get the holiday rules from management rather than relying on the building's usual weekday hours. Our building manager packet checklist covers the detailed paperwork requirements.

Leave room in your travel plans for pickup itself. If you are catching a flight or starting a long drive that day, tell the office about your departure time when arranging the move. Ask about the expected pickup window and leave enough time to be there while your belongings are collected. If you cannot stay, discuss the arrangements for someone to act on your behalf with California New York Express Movers before moving day.

Once your belongings are on their way, keep your phone accessible. Respond to calls from the office so any remaining questions can be resolved while you travel.

Holiday essentials to keep with you

Pack for the days between homes, including the possibility that you will be staying with family or in temporary accommodation. Keep medication, identification, chargers, essential documents and a change of clothes in your personal bags.

Keep an eye on the forecast at your destination and bring suitable clothing for Thanksgiving visits. If you have booked packing or other moving services, point out which bags are staying with you before the crew starts packing boxes.

Keep those bags separate from the shipment. That way, your travel plans do not depend on being able to unpack immediately after reaching your destination.

Be realistic about hosting, too. Allow time to get settled after delivery before committing to a holiday meal in your new home. A smaller gathering or a visit to family may make moving during the holiday season less stressful.

After your mover confirms delivery

Check the date and arrival window using the destination's local time. California New York Express Movers' delivery policy says the office makes arrangements with you or your authorized representative at least 24–48 hours before delivery and asks you to allow up to a five-hour window on the day.

Let building management know the date provided by California New York Express Movers and complete any required elevator or loading area reservation. If the building's approved hours conflict with the proposed delivery, raise that with your coordinator promptly.

Before the crew arrives, check that your keys work and clear the entrance and hallways of luggage, holiday decorations and visitors' bags. Decide where the main furniture pieces should go so you can direct placement. Our receiving guide covers the general handoff.

For New York holiday traffic and event notices, our NYC event-week access guide explains where to find current street notices. Pass any restrictions affecting your building to the coordinator.

Can someone else accept delivery during the holiday season?

Yes, provided California New York Express Movers' third-party authorization process is completed before delivery. Ask the office for the required form and confirm it has been received.

Choose someone who can be there for the full delivery window and stay until the work is finished. Give them working keys, a short room plan and a way to reach you. Check their holiday plans before asking them to help.

Review the third-party instructions together and settle any questions about payment or paperwork with the office. This gives your friend or family member clear instructions when accepting your belongings.

If your holiday plans change

Contact California New York Express Movers promptly if you can no longer attend or the building cannot allow access. Have your job reference ready and explain what changed, whether it is a delayed flight, an unavailable helper or a new building restriction.

The office will need to review the options and confirm any revised arrangements. Storage or redelivery charges may apply if an agreed delivery cannot be accepted; ask what applies to your shipment before making a backup plan.

Once a change is agreed, update your building contact and anyone helping you receive the shipment. Keep the office's contact number with your travel documents so you can reach the team if needed.
