First Apartment Essentials

Moving into your first apartment is such an exciting feeling. Now that the time has arrived, spending time making sure you have some essentials will make that moving in experience even better than you could ever have imagined it.

Before going and buying everything you’ve dreamed of for your first apartment, take a look through our essentials checklist. Depending on your budget, there are areas in which you can save and even be creative, but make sure you have some first day essentials. Remember, it’s your first apartment, there will come a time when you will be telling stories and reminiscing about this experience.

Cleaning Supplies

There’s nothing like moving into a clean apartment, especially your first apartment! Having some basic cleaning supplies on hand will make for a more pleasant moving in experience.

Cleaning essentials

  • Broom and dustpan
  • Bucket
  • Mop
  • Sponges: dishes and cleaning
  • Cloths
  • Dishwashing soap
  • Laundry detergent
  • Hand soap
  • Rubber gloves
  • Multi purpose cleaner
  • Garbage bags

Kitchen

Having a few basic essentials in the kitchen will make some of the simple necessities, such as making a cup or coffee or preparing a meal, very easy. If cooking is something you love, slowing kitting out your kitchen to match your passion can occur over time. Investing in one really good item allows you to build your equipment over a period of time. Good tools last and might even survive through all your future moves.

Kitchen essentials

  • Dishware
  • Bowls: small, medium and large
  • Flatware: knives, forks, spoons and teaspoons
  • Kitchen knives: bread, paring, carving
  • Cooking utensils: spatula, wooden spoon
  • Scissors
  • Mugs
  • Drinking glasses
  • Wine glasses
  • Kettle or coffee maker (if needed, you can always boil water in a small pot)
  • Pots and pans: small, medium and large frying pan. Small, medium and large pots.
  • Oven safe dish
  • Cutting board
  • Dish rack (if there is no dishwasher)
  • Dish towels
  • Bottle opener
  • Garbage bin

If you’re buying sets, it’s always a good idea to purchase the same quantities for items such as: dishware, flatware, and glasses. This way, should you have dinner parties or friends over, there will be enough.

Bedroom

Having a good quality mattress is an essential! If you’re planning to buy a new bed for your apartment, this will be one piece of furniture that you’ll want to consider splurging a little extra on. Other pieces of furniture are not quite as important as a good bed.

Bedroom essentials

  • Sheets: two sets to begin is advised
  • Duvet or comforter
  • Duvet cover
  • Pillows
  • Bedside lamp
  • Hangers for the closet
  • Organizers or set of drawers

Bathroom

The bathroom can be a sanctuary. And with only a few items, this room can become one of the favorite rooms in your apartment.

Bathroom essentials

  • Bath/shower mat
  • Shower curtain
  • Towels: 2 sets to begin
  • Hand towels
  • Plunger
  • Personal toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, body wash/soap

Living Room

The living room might be the main room of your apartment, but to begin with, there are just a few essentials that are needed for this room.

Living room essentials

  • Sofa or comfy seating
  • A place to eat: If you have the space, invest in a table. This could also be doubled as a desk if needed.
  • Lighting

As you settle into your new apartment, you will acquire additional pieces of furniture and other needed items. If you haven’t already hung some art, you might want to find some pieces that fit with your style. Perhaps adding a personal touch to the décor.
