Homesick After Moving

Homesickness is a feeling of longing for one’s home when absent from it. Moving to a new home, city or state, could cause you to feel homesick. As exciting as a move can be, it can also evoke different emotions. If you are feeling homesick, whether it's a longing for the home you will return to, or for the home that will no longer be, rest assured, over time, these feelings will fade. To help you through the initial stages of homesickness after moving, we’ve gathered a few tips.

Identify Feelings Of Homesickness

Certain symptoms arise when we feel homesick. They could include anxiety, nostalgia, and depression. Once you can identify that what you are feeling is in fact homesickness, you can begin to find ways to move on and enjoy where you are.

Be Patient

You never know when feelings of homesickness will emerge. It could be while you’re packing up your belongings and reminiscing about the past. It could occur en route to your new home, or even several months after the move. If and when these feelings do present themselves, know that in time they will pass, but for now, recognize these feelings and let them pass when the time is right.

Stay Connected

Moving to a new place means meeting new people and having new experiences. To ease any feelings of homesickness that may be holding you back, stay connected to the familiar of where you came from. With today's technology, sharing your new life and staying connected to family and friends is so much easier. Make sure though, not to let the old hold you back from the new.

Create Routines

It’s important not to dwell in the state of homesickness. Staying busy while at the same time going through the feelings, will make it easier to deal with. Make sure to be out and about daily and explore your new community. If you have hobbies and interests, find out where you can continue to pursue these activities. Over time you might stumble upon new things that interest you. Most communities will have a social media page, or community site. Check what’s going on!

Keep Healthy

During times of transition, remaining healthy is very important. Maintaining your health and wellbeing will help keep you balanced during times of sadness or longing. Regular exercise and healthy eating are a sure way to venture confidently into the unknown and lessen the nostalgia of the past.

Find Help

No matter your age, feelings of homesickness are very natural. If you feel it has lasted longer than what is comfortable, find a friend or professional that you can talk to and share what you are going through. Having a little light shone on a dark period can do wonders and reveal many things, helping you to see the homesickness for what it is, and move beyond it.

Once you have overcome your feelings of homesickness, you will have less of an emotional burden to carry. You are now able to fully embrace and enjoy your new home.
