Moving across the country requires a lot of preparation and planning. Choosing experienced and reputable cross country movers like Precision Packing & Installation with a solid two decades worth of experience is the key to a safe and secure move. But even with the best mover to transport your belongings, it is critical to plan well ahead of the move to avoid potential problems.
Below is a guide with a timeline and corresponding actions to take so you can strategically prepare for your move:
12 weeks prior to move date:
You should plan for any air travel as early as now. This time is also the best time to start sorting through your garage, loft and basement. Figure out what to do with items that you can’t move or may be prohibited by the mover because they are unsafe to transport such as fuel and chemicals.
10 weeks prior to move date:
After segregating all the items you don’t want to take with you, make sure to properly dispose of all items that need to go. You can put up a garage sale for all other usable items. Shred all personal or confidential documents before discarding them.
8 weeks prior to move date:
Start preparing a mailing list of contacts you need to notify about your change of address. Give notice to your banks, Credit Card Company, subscriptions, etc.
6 weeks prior to move date:
Contact Precision Packing & Installation to book your move date. Advise them if you’ve made any new purchase of household items. Arrange for your mails to be forwarded to your new address.
4 weeks prior to move date:
Make a list of items that you’ll bring with you or will not be loaded into the moving truck, including your wardrobe. Start disassembling play equipment out in the yard. Cancel subscriptions and arrange for utilities and other services to be connected at your new address.
1 week prior to move date:
Consume all food in the fridge. Clean all gardening tools and equipment. Empty the mower of fuel. Buy medication good for two weeks and prepare copies of prescriptions.
On your moving day:
Have a good breakfast so you’re energized to start the day. When the crew from Precision Packing arrives, let them know which items need extra care. Do final check of all storage areas before the truck leaves. Confirm that you have the correct contact number of the driver and that the driver has your number and the correct address of the destination. Contact Precision Packing right away for any concerns or changes during the moving day.
