Moving 101: Glossary of Moving Terms - F
Flight of Stairs
This term is often used to describe the additional fees charged for
carrying items up or down flights of stairs either at the place of
origin or at the destination. For example: a third-floor walkup counts as two
flights since the mover begins on the ground level. If the elevator in your
building is large enough to transport your household goods, the flight of
stairs charge is waived.
Freight-Service
A freight service is a low-cost alternative to a full moving service. If you
choose to move your household good using a freight service, you are
hiring a moving company to do just some of the work for you. Your
mover will pick up household goods from your origin address and will
deliver to the doorstep of your destination (i.e. the movers will not place
items where you need them inside your home).
Packing services or supplies are not included and you will be responsible for packing all your items beforehand.
Full Replacement Value Coverage
Full replacement value is an insurance related term. It describes the
amount of money you will have to pay n order purchase a new
replacement for a damaged item, regardless of how old the damaged
item was. The states number is the amount you need to pay per every
$1,000 of value.
In some cases, a deductible is applied and it should be stated in your bill of lading. The deductible value is marked next to the cost-per-$1,000 figure.
For example: 7.00/150 means that the consumer must pay $7.00 per $1,000 of declared replacement value to cover the load against loss, and the first $150 of damage is not covered.
Some valuation policies are calculated on a sliding scale, where the price per $1,000 of coverage is determined by the total amount of coverage. In these cases, a moving company is requested to quote valuation prices based on $25,000 of coverage.
Full Service Mover
This is the most common type of moving and relocation services offered
by the majority of moving companies. If you choose a full service move,
your moving company will move all of your household goods from your
origin to your destination.
Commonly known as door-to-door service, your mover will pick up your items from every room in your old residence and deliver to the exact room you will specify in your new residence.
Wrapping services are usually included in this type of service and your movers will wrap individual items of furniture in moving pads to protect them while in transit. Additional packing services, such as full or partial packing, are usually available if you choose this type of service.
