Gathering Packing Supplies

Packing your household will require packing supplies. Over time, packing supplies manufacturers developed new lines of sophisticated packing materials to allow the untrained packer to easily pack his items while providing maximum protection to the packed items.

If you decided that you are not going to hire your moving company for the packing, you will need to start collecting packing materials up to 6 weeks prior to your moving date. Having packing materials at your disposal enough time before moving will allow you to pack just a few items every day and still be ready on time.

Collecting Packing Supplies

If your budget is limited, start to collect used cartons to minimize your expenses on purchasing new ones. If you moved before, you may still have the old cartons used for the last move.

You can also try to get used cartons from your local grocery and liquor store. Speak with the grocery store manager and ask him to keep some cartons with covers aside. Liquor cartons are great as they usually contain breakable bottles and therefore are manufactured to protect glass bottles. These are tough cartons that can hold breakables such as vases and crystals.

Cartons of electronic, appliances, and computers are also great for moving as these are heavy-duty cartons that are strong enough and large enough to be used as moving boxes. In addition, most of these cartons are used only once so expect them to be in good condition for your moving needs.

Purchasing Packing Supplies

If your budget is not a concern, purchase new moving cartons at a shipping supplies store. These stores provide cartons that are specially designed to accommodate your packing and moving requirements.

Moving boxes come in all sizes and shapes to fit the different items you need to pack. You can find specially designed wardrobe boxes that allow you to hang your clothes, dish packs that are well padded to protect your kitchen ware in transit.

You may also consider purchasing your packing materials directly from your moving company. This method is especially recommended if you do not know exactly what you need. Your moving company representative will be able to provide you with an accurate list of required supplies based on your inventory list.

Get Extra

Whether you purchase your packing supplies from your moving company or from a store, be sure to purchase some extra supplies just to be safe. Most shipping supplies stores and moving companies will refund any unused materials that you return.
