4-5 Weeks Before Your Move

Find out how to plan a successful move, and learn what needs to be done 4-5 weeks prior to your move.OK, so you are now getting closer to the big day and there are more issues that require your attention. In this pre-move phase you will start pinpointing your move needs and start making the arrangements related to your change of address, packing, moving, and knowing your new location.

Change of Address

This is the right time to write down a list of all of those you want to notify in regards to your move and new address.

Here is a list for example:

  • Friends and Family: send a letter or email your new address. Don't forget to mention your arrival date to the new location.
  • Post Office: use the following link to complete a "Change of Address" form , or visit your local post office to obtain a "Change of Address" form. You can make copies of this "change of address" form or make up your own change of address notice to give to the following people and businesses.
  • Utility Companies: such as telephone, trash, cable/satellite network, water, power, ISP (internet service provider).
  • Insurance Companies: update your new address on all of your policies. If necessary, cancel your renter/home owner insurance starting your departure date.
  • Banks and Financial Institutions: update your address on all accounts including checking, savings, loans, and credit.
  • Credit bureaus: make sure that your credit report stays updated.
    Equifax
    TransUnion
    Experian
  • Health Providers: including your doctors, dentist, and if you own a pet, the veterinarian.
  • Local and Federal Government Agencies: the IRS, DMV, etc.
  • Schools: provide your children's school with the new address to allow them to keep in touch. It is also recommended to notify the parents of your children's best friends of your new address. That will help your kids staying in touch with old friends.
  • Other authorities, clubs, associations and organizations, including, newspapers and magazine subscriptions, and the church / temple.

Don't forget to make arrangements with all service providers in the new location as well. Provide them with your arrival date and try to set deactivation date to one day after you leave and activation date to one day prior to your arrival.

Packing

If you decide to pack yourself, make sure that all packing materials are ready. That includes boxes, shrink wrap, bubble wrap, tape, padding paper, etc. start packing items that you don't use often. [for example the unused wardrobe]

Please note: if you choose to purchase packing materials directly from us, please visit our packing page for prices or contact us.

If you are moving with children, it may be a good idea to get them more involved in the moving process. One way to do so is to allow them to help with packing. Be sure to supervise them while they are packing and allow them to pack only unbreakable items.

Moving

Start organize your move by deciding and making lists of what items you will not transport, what items your mover will move and what items you will move yourself.
