3 Weeks before the Move
3 weeks before your move is when the real countdown begins. In this phase you need to start finalizing the last details of your move. If there are any unfinished tasks from the previous phase, it would be a good idea to finish them as soon as possible.
Moving Out of a Rental Unit?
If you didn't do so by now, this must be the latest time for you to give notice to your landlord. Be sure to do that right away to avoid late-payments.
Finalize all Details with Your Moving Company
It would be very wise to finalize all the following details with your moving company. Keep in mind that most moving companies book moves for 3-4 weeks ahead. This fact is even more important if you scheduled your pick up date for a weekend. Here is the list of details you must finalize with your moving company:
Date
Lock down your date and notify your mover if there are any date
changes required. Don't postpone this task as dates might be booked if
you wait.
Inventory List
Let your mover know if there are any changes in your inventory list.
Remember: any changes in your inventory list will affect the final price
you will have to pay. Be sure to mention all unusual / oversized items
such as a piano or a large screen TV.
Vehicle Transport
You must notify your mover if you require any vehicle transport
services. Some moving companies utilize a sub-contractor for car
transports and there are arrangements that need to be done with those
service providers.
Packing and Unpacking
If there are any changes in your packing or unpacking plans that involve
your moving company, notify them to allow your mover to make all
necessary arrangements. For example: if you planned to do all your
packing but you realized that you cannot complete that task yourself,
your mover must know that you require packing services.
Routes
Confirm any extra stops required for pick of goods. Let your mover
know if there are any additional stops.
Dispose of Combustibles and Flammables
Federal laws and regulations forbid your moving company to transport dangerous flammable items and liquids such as:
- Fireworks
- Cleaning fluids
- Matches
- Acids
- Chemistry sets
- Aerosol cans
- Ammunition
- Poisons
Drain fuel from your lawn mower and other machinery. Discard partly used cans of oil, thinner, bleach, or any other substances that may be flammable. Discard propane tanks which are used for barbecue grills.
Moving with Pets
Make transportation arrangements for your pets. Take your pets to your veterinarian to ensure proper up to date health certificates and rabies inoculations. Some states will require these documents.
