2 Weeks Before Your Move - Part 1

2 weeks prior to your move is almost when you start counting the days left until the big day. For many people the last two weeks are the most stressful. This when you start asking yourself: "can I finish everything on time? Will this day ever come?" Etc.

There are two weeks before your move. Find out more about specific moving preparations you should make.If you followed this guide from the first step, relax. You are going to make it. You move day will eventually arrive and yes, you are going to be fine. However, this is not the time to rest. There are few more tasks that must be completed within the next 2 weeks in order to assure a smooth and relaxed experience on the day of the move.

Children

Depending on your children's age you have a few options:

Babies and Infants:
Babies and infants can distract you on the day of the move. It is usually better to make arrangements for them to be out of the house, with relatives or friends. If you cannot arrange for them to be out of then house, arrange for them to be with a babysitter so your mind is free to deal with the movers.

Keep in mind that some kids may be troubled by the move and therefore upset when they see their items and memories being loaded onto the truck.

Children 5 years and older
If your children can deal with the move and be productive, keep them involved and have them help on the day of the move. That will also give them an opportunity for another emotional farewell.

Backup Your Computer

Nowadays, a lot of your important information is stored on your computer. This is the right time to start preparing for moving your computer. Back up all your computer files on a disk.

Here is a partial list of files that need to be backed up:

  • Emails
  • Contact list
  • Documents: word processor, e-books
  • Media files: i.e. music, video, pictures
  • Program set up files
  • Favorites

Consider taking all back up files and disks with you and keep in mind the safety rules for transporting digital media. For example: if you are moving from New York to California, remember that the weather in California is much hotter than the weather in New York and that the change of temperature and exposure to extreme temperatures can damage your media.

Make Arrangements for Your Moving Company

The main purpose of this task is to allow your moving company an easy access to your home and prevent additional charges

Parking
Arrange for parking for the moving truck. If you live in California, make sure the moving truck can fit in your driveway or on the street. If you live in New York, reserve a parking spot for the moving truck.

These arrangements will prevent long carry fee, an additional charge that applies in case the distance from your residence to truck exceeds the limit (usually 150 feet).

Elevator
This factor is relevant mostly to New York residents. Reserve the elevator for your move date to allow the movers to use it instead of the stairs.
